About AILET- All India Law Entrance Test

AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is a national-level law entrance exam conducted by National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi)- consistently ranked as India's #1 law school by NIRF. Unlike CLAT (conducted by the Consortium of NLUs), AILET is NLU Delhi's own university-level exam, making admission to NLU Delhi extremely competitive.

The exam is held annually for admission to the 5-year BA LLB (Hons) and 1-year LLM programs. Total seats in BA LLB (Hons) are approximately 180, of which roughly 47 are in the General (open) category.

Conducted by NLU Delhi, AILET 2026 is an online (CBT) exam of 90 minutes with 150 MCQs covering English, GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Maths. Each wrong answer carries a negative marking of −0.25. What is AILET and who conducts it?

AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is conducted by National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi) for admission to its 5-year integrated BA LLB (Hons) and 1-year LLM programs. Unlike CLAT which is conducted by the Consortium of NLUs, AILET is a university-specific exam and its scores are used exclusively for NLU Delhi admissions.

How does this AILET predictor work?

What is the difference between Round 1 and later counselling rounds?

Round 1 is the most competitive- only the top-ranked students get seats. In later rounds, candidates who accepted seats in earlier rounds or were allotted elsewhere vacate seats, making the cutoff looser (higher rank number is accepted). So a rank that may be 'Tough' in Round 1 could become 'Safe' by Round 3 or Final Round.

How many seats does NLU Delhi offer for BA LLB?

NLU Delhi offers approximately 180 total seats for BA LLB (Hons), of which around 47 are in the General (open) category. The remaining seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC (NCL), EWS, and other special categories including NRI/Foreign Nationals seats.

What is a good AILET rank for NLU Delhi admission?

Based on 2026 data, a General category rank within 60 (Round 1) is needed. EWS candidates need a rank within 298, OBC within 330, SC within 1480, and ST within 1372. These cutoffs shift each year based on applicant pool, paper difficulty, and seat availability. Always check the official NLU Delhi merit list.

Are AILET scores accepted by other colleges apart from NLU Delhi?

A handful of private law institutions claim to accept AILET scores- including Army Institute of Law (Mohali), BITS Law School (Mumbai), Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College (Pune), Ramaiah Institute of Legal Studies (Bengaluru), and others. However, these colleges run their own independent admissions processes and do NOT publish official AILET category-wise closing-rank data. Contact them directly for their cutoffs.

Is AILET harder than CLAT?

AILET and CLAT test similar skills (English, GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Techniques), but AILET historically had a shorter, more time-pressured format. Since AILET leads to only one university (NLU Delhi- ranked #1 among NLUs), the competition for each seat is intense. Most serious law aspirants appear in both exams.

What happens if my rank is above the closing rank?

If your rank is higher (worse) than the Round 1 closing rank, you may still have a chance in later counselling rounds if seats vacate. The predictor marks these as 'Tough' or 'Unlikely' to reflect this. Always attempt all rounds of counselling if interested, and keep alternatives like CLAT-accepting NLUs in mind.
