About Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences
Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), popularly known as VIMS Bellary or Ballari Medical College and Research Centre, is one of Karnataka's oldest and most respected government medical institutions. It was established in 1961 on the historically significant 173-acre site of the former Allipur Jail — a jail that had housed prominent Indian freedom fighters including Sri Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, Sri V.V. Giri (later President of India), Sri Bejawada Gopala Reddy, Sri Ghantasala Venkateshwara Rao, and Sri Tekur Subramanya. The jail was closed in 1958 and its entire 173-acre campus was handed over to the Government of Karnataka to start the Medical College. The Medical College Hospital was commissioned in 1966. In 1996, to overcome administrative shortcomings, the college was made an autonomous institution and renamed 'Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary.' VIMS is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and recognized by NMC. It is widely regarded as the 4th best government medical college in Karnataka. The institution has a working philosophy of Education, Service, and Research. VIMS offers MBBS (150 seats), PG MD/MS/Diploma (104 seats across 16 specializations), Super-Specialty DM/MCh (4 seats), and a GNM Nursing Diploma program. The campus spans 173 acres and houses three attached hospitals with a combined capacity of over 1,170 beds: the main Medical College Hospital (680 beds), the District Hospital (210 beds for Paediatrics, Gynaecology, and Postnatal cases), and the Government Wellesley TB & Chest Diseases Hospital (280 beds, est. 1929). A Super-Specialty Trauma Care Hospital is also functional on the VIMS campus with 24×7 emergency and trauma care services. On average, 10,000–12,000 operations are performed every year. The college consistently produces strong results in RGUHS university examinations — with more than 80% of students passing in the last many years — and has produced national PG entrance examination rank holders.
