About University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering
University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) stands as a beacon of engineering education in India, established in 1917 by the legendary Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Originally founded as Government Engineering College, UVCE holds the prestigious distinction of being the fifth engineering college established in India and the first in Karnataka. Over its illustrious journey of more than 100 years, UVCE has evolved from a modest beginning with just 20 students in Civil and Mechanical branches to a thriving institution with over 3,300 students across 7 different engineering disciplines. The college was envisioned by Sir M. Visvesvaraya with the objective of developing a skilled technical workforce among the youth of Mysore (now Karnataka), laying the foundation for the state's emergence as India's technology hub. UVCE operates from two campuses that together create a unique learning environment. The main campus is situated at K R Circle in the heart of Bangalore, in the neighborhood of Vidhana Soudha (the seat of Karnataka State Legislature), providing students with a central location that's well-connected to all parts of the city. This heritage campus houses the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Computer Science Engineering. The second campus at Jnana Bharathi is spread over 50 acres and comprises the departments of Civil Engineering and Architecture, offering students a more spacious and green environment for learning. UVCE is affiliated with Bangalore University and has achieved the unique distinction of attaining university status, placing it alongside premier institutions like IITs in terms of academic recognition. The college is approved by AICTE and accredited with Grade 'A' by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.17, reflecting its sustained commitment to quality education. Various programs are also accredited by NBA, ensuring that the education meets international standards. Currently, the college is on a transformational journey towards becoming an Institute of National Eminence under the leadership of its Board of Governors, chaired by Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, IAS (Retd.), with a focus on governance reforms, academic excellence, global partnerships, and innovation-driven learning. UVCE offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programs in six specializations: Computer Science Engineering, Information Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Additionally, the college offers Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and a wide range of Master of Technology (M.Tech) programs across 22 specializations, providing opportunities for advanced study and research. The institution also offers M.Arch programs and has active doctoral programs across various disciplines, making it a complete ecosystem for technical education and research. Being a government institution, UVCE offers highly affordable education with annual fees of approximately INR 22,000-22,430 for B.Tech programs, making quality engineering education accessible to students from all economic backgrounds. The total fee for the four-year B.E. program ranges from INR 1.35 to 1.94 lakhs for general category students, with even lower fees for SC/ST students (approximately INR 78,000 to 1 lakh for the entire program). This affordable fee structure, combined with the college's excellent academic reputation, makes UVCE one of the most sought-after engineering colleges in Karnataka. The faculty at UVCE comprises highly qualified and experienced academicians, many holding Ph.D. degrees from prestigious institutions. The faculty members are not just teachers but also active researchers, contributing to academic journals and presenting papers at national and international conferences. The student-faculty interaction is enriched by the college's legacy and the dedication of professors who have been associated with the institution for decades, passing on both knowledge and the cherished values that UVCE represents. UVCE has state-of-the-art infrastructure including well-equipped laboratories for all engineering disciplines, a comprehensive library with extensive collection of technical books, journals, and e-resources, modern classrooms, computing facilities with high-speed internet, and research centers promoting advanced research in various fields. The college provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls at both campuses. The hostel fees are extremely affordable at approximately INR 90 per day for mess charges with no residential fees for general category students, and completely free for SC/ST students. The hostels provide a supportive environment for students coming from different parts of Karnataka and other states.
