About Osmania Medical College

Official website

Osmania Medical College (OMC), Hyderabad, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in the world, originally founded in 1846 as Hyderabad Medical School during the reign of the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad, Afzal ud Dowla, Asaf Jah V. William Campbell Maclean established it after successfully treating the ailing Nizam with Western medicine. In 1846, Edward Lawrie, then principal, conducted landmark chloroform anaesthesia experiments (Hyderabad Chloroform Commission) at the attached Afzal Gunj Hospital. In 1889, Rupa Bai Furdoonji — said to be the world's first qualified female anaesthesiologist — graduated from OMC. After Osmania University's establishment in 1919 by the 7th Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, it was renamed Osmania Medical College. OMC is a government institution affiliated with KNRUHS, Warangal, and recognised by NMC. It offers 250 MBBS seats annually, 390 PG MD/MS/Diploma seats in 27 disciplines, and 66 Super Specialty DM/MCh seats in 15 disciplines — the highest PG and SS seats among all Telangana government colleges. NIRF rank: 48th (2024). ISO certified. The 10 affiliated hospitals — including Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Niloufer Hospital, Sir Ronald Ross Institute, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital — provide exceptional patient diversity. OSMECON (annual medical conference) sees 2,000+ delegates from 17 states and 5 countries. Notable alumni: Rupa Bai Furdoonji, Dr. K.
