The college is named after Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (1892–1974) — the former Maharaja of Parlakhemundi, Ganjam, who was the first Prime Minister of Odisha post-independence (before being redesignated Chief Minister with Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab forming the first government).
