Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital (GMKMC), Salem is the prestigious tertiary care government medical college of the Steel City of Tamil Nadu. It was started on 23 April 1986 by upgrading the existing District Government Hospital which was established in 1917, on a campus spanning 150 acres. The foundation stone for the college was laid by the late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on 25 October 1988. Named after Mohan Kumaramangalam, a prominent Indian politician and minister, GMKMC is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and recognized by the National Medical Commission. It is one of the largest government medical college campuses in Tamil Nadu, offering MBBS, extensive postgraduate MD/MS and DM/M.Ch. super-specialty programs, allied health sciences, and a nursing college.
