GMC Bhopal was inaugurated on 13 August 1955 by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. It initially operated from the Polytechnic College premises with two departments and 50 students, and is now housed in the historic Fatehgarh Fort campus in central Bhopal.

Hamidia Hospital (formerly Prince of Wales Hospital, built in 1913) is the principal 2,000-bed multi-specialty government teaching hospital — the largest public hospital in Madhya Pradesh. It covers all general specialties and super-specialty departments with advanced diagnostic facilities.

GMC Bhopal offers 165 MD/MS seats across 22 disciplines, 4 super-specialty DM/MCh seats in 3 disciplines (M.Ch Paediatric Surgery, M.Ch Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, plus DM), and 6 PG Diploma seats. M.Sc Medical Biochemistry and paramedical programs in 10 departments are also offered.

The AIQ closing rank for GMC Bhopal MBBS for the general category was approximately 10,500 in 2024 (NEET score ~647 marks). MP state quota closing rank typically ranges 20,000–35,000 in later rounds. GMC Bhopal is one of the most competitive government medical colleges in MP.
