DMCH's origins date to 1934, when Dr. Banarsi Dass Soni started the Arya Medical School in Civil Lines, Ludhiana. In 1964, it became a full-fledged MBBS college under the name Dayanand Medical College & Hospital with industrialist H.R. Dhanda as Founder President. DMCH was the first hospital in Punjab to set up a dialysis unit in nephrology service in 1980, and since April 2001, the Hero DMC Heart Institute provides advanced cardiac care.

DMCH Ludhiana is ranked 36th (score 55.65) in the Medical category by NIRF 2025, an improvement from 40th in 2024. It was also ranked 28th by India Today 2025 and 14th by The Week 2025 — consistently among the top private medical colleges in North India.

Yes, DMCH operates a College of Nursing offering B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing with 100 seats annually. Admission is through the Punjab Para Medical Entrance Test (PPMET) conducted by BFUHS, Faridkot. The nursing college is approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).
