Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, is a central university established in 1920, evolving out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College founded in 1877 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. AMU is an Institution of National Importance and is accredited by NAAC with an 'A+' grade. The university comprises 13 Faculties - including Agricultural Sciences, Arts, Commerce, Engineering & Technology, Law, Life Sciences, Management Studies & Research, Medicine, Science, Social Sciences, Theology, Unani Medicine, and International Studies - each with several teaching departments, along with 5 colleges (including J.N. Medical College, Dr. Z.A. Dental College, Zakir Husain College of Engineering & Technology, and the pioneering Women's College), several Centres, Institutes and Academies, and residential schools. AMU draws students from across India as well as from abroad, particularly Africa, West Asia and Southeast Asia, and offers courses at certificate, diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The university runs on a residential-cum-day-scholar system with an extensive hostel network for both men and women students. Its central library, the Maulana Azad Library, is one of the largest university libraries in Asia. Admissions to most AMU programmes are conducted through the university's own AMU Entrance Test, while admission to J.N. Medical College (MBBS/MD/MS) and Dr. Z.A. Dental College (BDS) is through NEET UG/PG via MCC counselling as per applicable central rules.
