Plans change, and this time it's IIT Madras doing the changing. If you were gearing up to register for GATE 2027 on August 14, you'll want to reset that reminder. The institute has rescheduled the opening of the GATE Online Application Processing System, better known as GOAPS, to August 27, 2026. It's a two-week shift from what the original notification said back in July, and it comes with a couple of other date adjustments worth knowing before you plan your next few weeks around it.

What Exactly Changed

The GATE 2027 information brochure, released on July 20, had originally set August 14 as the registration start date, with September 21 as the deadline without a late fee and September 30 with one. That's no longer the case. IIT Madras has now confirmed, both through its official GATE 2027 website and through the revised schedule circulated afterward, that registration will begin on August 27 instead.

No specific reason has been publicly detailed for the shift, at least not in what IIT Madras has released so far. What matters practically is that you now have roughly two extra weeks before the window opens, and correspondingly, everything downstream, correction window, exam city allotment, has moved along with it.

The One Thing You Really Shouldn't Skip: DigiLocker

This part hasn't changed with the reschedule, but it's worth repeating because it trips people up. Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals applying to GATE 2027, not optional, not recommended, mandatory. If you don't already have a DigiLocker account linked and your details updated, that's genuinely something to sort out in the next two weeks rather than on registration day itself. On top of that, live photo capture and facial recognition, matched against your Aadhaar record, are now part of the application process, so make sure your Aadhaar details are current too.

Why This Extra Time Is Worth Using Well

It's tempting to treat a two-week delay as just extra breathing room, but it's genuinely more useful if you spend it getting your documentation and DigiLocker setup sorted rather than just pushing your plans back by two weeks as well. Given how central DigiLocker and facial verification now are to this year's process, candidates who show up on August 27 already prepared are the ones least likely to run into friction once the window actually opens.

This is a developing situation, and IIT Madras hasn't ruled out further clarifications as the new date approaches. It's worth checking the official GATE 2027 website directly over the next couple of weeks rather than relying on the original brochure dates, which are no longer accurate.
