A CAT score between the 80th and 90th percentile will not open the doors of the top IIMs, but it still keeps many good B-schools in play. For the 2027 admission cycle, the names that come up most often for this band are IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, Goa Institute of Management (GIM), TAPMI Manipal, FORE School of Management, Great Lakes, KJ Somaiya, XIM Bhubaneswar, LBSIM and BIMTECH. Most of them shortlist on the full profile, so a percentile in this range gets you into the pool but does not guarantee a call. To see where your own score fits, start with the CAT College Predictor 2027 and then read the details below.
One honest note before we go further. CAT 2026 has not been held yet, and none of the colleges below has announced a fixed CAT 2026 cutoff. The percentile figures in this article come from earlier cycles and from education portals, so treat them as a guide and not as a promise. Wherever an institute has published official details, we have used those.

Latest update: CAT 2026 and the 2027 admission cycle

CAT 2026 will be held on Sunday, 29 November 2026, and IIM Indore is the conducting institute this year. Registration opened on 3 August 2026 and has now closed. The original last date was 15 September, and reports say the window was extended to 22 September.
Scores from CAT 2026 are used for batches that begin in mid-2027. The result is expected between late December and early January, but that date is tentative until the conducting IIM announces it. Some colleges, including GIM, IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad, have already opened applications, so you do not have to wait for the result to start your paperwork.

What does an 80 to 90 percentile really mean for MBA admission?

Percentile shows the share of candidates you scored higher than. An 85 percentile means you did better than roughly 85 out of every 100 test takers after normalisation across the CAT sessions. It does not mean you scored 85 percent marks.
At the top B-schools, percentile works like an entry ticket. In the 80 to 90 band, it behaves more like one input among several. Institutes also look at your class 10 and 12 marks, graduation marks, work experience, academic background and your performance in the interview.
IMI Delhi is a good example. Its admission page says there is no fixed cutoff and that selection is a holistic evaluation of academics, work experience, test scores and other factors. Shortlisted applicants go through a video assessment before the final personal interview. IMT Ghaziabad describes a similar approach, shortlisting on academic performance, test scores, work experience and the overall profile.

How colleges select candidates in the 80 to 90 percentile band

Most private B-schools follow a two-stage process. First, they shortlist applicants using CAT percentile, academic record and work experience. Then they call shortlisted candidates for a selection round that may include a written ability test, a group discussion and a personal interview.
Your final score is usually a weighted mix. The exact weights differ from college to college and can change every year, so read the admission notification of each institute carefully.

Profile factors that can lift an 80 to 90 percentile application

  • Strong class 10, class 12 and graduation marks, because many colleges give them weight in the composite score.
  • Relevant work experience. Some programmes, such as GIM's Big Data Analytics track, are profile-based and do not rely on a single cutoff.
  • Professional qualifications such as CA, CFA or similar credentials, which GIM lists among its Achiever's Round criteria for certain programmes.
  • Good sectional balance. A candidate who is weak in one section may be screened out at colleges that look at sectional performance.
  • Clear career goals and an honest, well-prepared interview.

How to find colleges that match your CAT percentile

  1. Download your CAT 2026 scorecard after the result and note your overall and sectional percentiles.
  2. Enter your percentile, category and graduation marks in the CaderaEdu college predictor tools to see realistic options.
  3. Compare two or three finalists side by side using the college comparison tool, looking at fees, placements and location.
  4. Browse top private management colleges in India to add a few safe options below your main targets.
  5. Check the official website of every college for dates, fees and eligibility before you pay any application fee.
Your CAT percentile may not be your only card. Many of these colleges also accept XAT or GMAT, and some other B-schools use their own tests. If your CAT score ends up lower than expected, these predictors can show you backup options:

Where to look: city-wise options for 80 to 90 percentile

Location affects internships, placements and living costs, so it deserves a place in your shortlist. These hubs bring together management colleges for the cities where most candidates in this band apply:

Fees, scholarships and return on investment

Colleges in this band are usually private and carry high fees. IMI Delhi lists a programme fee of ₹23.54 lakh for its PGDM programmes. That figure does not include everything, so check hostel, mess and other charges on the official page before you decide.
Scholarships can soften the cost. IMT Ghaziabad publishes a 25 percent scholarship on the academic fee for eligible female candidates, plus merit scholarships linked to published CAT, XAT and GMAT criteria. GIM runs its ACCESS scholarship, which offers up to 45 awards of ₹5 lakh each for PGDM. IMI Delhi has tied up with banks for education loans and offers its own scholarships.
Placement numbers deserve a careful look. The IMI Delhi admission page lists an average CTC of ₹18.08 LPA. GIM shows an average CTC of ₹16.27 LPA for its PGDM 2024-26 batch. Compare average and median packages with the total fee instead of chasing the highest offer, which is usually earned by a small group.

What if your percentile is close to 80 or close to 90?

If you are close to 80, widen your list. Apply to more colleges, especially those that give weight to work experience and academics. Colleges that discuss 75 to 85 percentile, such as BIMTECH, deserve a serious look, along with institutes that accept XAT or CMAT if you have taken those exams.
If you are close to 90, aim higher without dropping your safety options. Apply early to IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, GIM and TAPMI. A few newer IIMs may also call candidates with excellent academics and work experience, but that depends on category and profile.
Applying early can also save money. GIM, for example, charges lower application fees for first-mover and early-bird applicants. Its published fee for one programme starts at ₹2,000 plus GST for the first deadline and rises to ₹2,750 closer to the last date.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating an unofficial cutoff as final. Many portals publish expected percentiles, but institutes rarely announce fixed numbers.
  • Applying only to colleges at the top of your range. Keep at least two or three safe options.
  • Ignoring sectional scores, academic record and work experience, which can matter as much as the overall percentile.
  • Missing deadlines. GIM and IMI Delhi both have staged dates, and late applications can cost more or close the window.
  • Choosing a college on brand alone without checking fees, median placements and location fit.
  • Waiting for the result before preparing for the group discussion and interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which MBA colleges accept 80-90 CAT percentile in 2027?

Colleges commonly listed in this range include IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, Goa Institute of Management, TAPMI Manipal, FORE School of Management, Great Lakes, KJ Somaiya, XIM Bhubaneswar, LBSIM and BIMTECH. Selection depends on your overall profile and not only on percentile, and no fixed CAT 2026 cutoffs have been announced.

Can I get IMT Ghaziabad with 85 percentile in CAT?

It is possible but not guaranteed. IMT Ghaziabad shortlists using academics, test scores, work experience and overall profile, and its official page does not list a fixed cutoff. A strong academic record and good work experience improve your chances.

Does IMI Delhi have a CAT cutoff?

IMI Delhi states on its admission page that there is no fixed cutoff. Selection is holistic and includes a video assessment and a personal interview. Reports from the previous cycle mention roughly 88 to 90 percentile, but these are unofficial.

Is 80 percentile in CAT good for an MBA?

It can be enough for a decent private B-school, especially if you have good academics or work experience. At this score you should apply widely, compare fees with placements and keep a few safe options.

When will the CAT 2026 result be declared?

CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026. The result is expected between late December and early January, but the exact date is tentative until the conducting IIM announces it on the official CAT website.

Can I apply to MBA colleges before the CAT result?

Yes. GIM, IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad have already opened applications for the 2027 batch, and many colleges accept applications from candidates who have taken or will receive their CAT 2026 score. Applying early can also lower the application fee at some institutes, such as GIM.

Do these colleges accept scores other than CAT?

Yes. IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi and GIM also accept XAT 2027 and GMAT scores. IMT accepts CMAT only for its Nagpur campus. Other colleges may accept SNAP, NMAT or their own entrance tests, so check each admission page.

Is it worth taking a drop to improve an 85 percentile?

It depends on your target college, fee budget and career goals. If you already have calls from respectable institutes with strong placements, many candidates choose to join. A retake makes sense only when your goal institute needs a clearly higher score and you are confident of improving.
